Who takes the gifted test in English?

The gifted identification process in Hebrew-language schools has two stages. Stage A is taken in class in grade 2. Children who do best in their class move on to Stage B, which is held in a regional test center. The Parents' Portal says that a child can take Stage B in an adapted language, including English, and that parents need to apply online, in the portal, on time. This option suits children who moved to Israel recently and are more at home in English than in Hebrew.

The dates change every year. For the current dates and conditions, check the Ministry of Education's Parents' Portal. You can also follow our gifted test dates page (in Hebrew).

What is in the Stage B test?

The Ministry of Education's description of Stage B for the 2025-26 school year lists five sections, in this order. It says each section has about 10 questions and its own time limit, that the exam takes 70 minutes, and that the Ministry may add more sections. Our practice test follows the same five sections, in the same order.

1

Word relationships

Verbal analogies: find the pair of words that are connected in the same way.

2

Missing words

Sentence completion: choose the words that make the sentence make sense.

3

Word problems

Short math problems in everyday situations, at a grade 2 level.

4

Missing number in a shape

Number patterns: find the rule in two shapes and use it in the third.

5

What comes next?

Shape patterns: sequences, shapes in three rows, and the missing piece of a carpet.

Sample questions from the booklet

These are the solved examples from the first three sections, exactly as they appear in the booklet.

Section 1 – What is the relationship between the words?

shoe : foot

1. glove : hand   2. hat : coat   3. head : hat   4. sock : shoe

Answer: 1. We wear a shoe on the foot, and a glove on the hand. In "head : hat" the words are in the wrong order.

Section 2 – Which words are missing from the sentence?

The dog was ______, so I gave him a bowl of ______.

1. sleepy, water   2. thirsty, water   3. thirsty, shoes   4. happy, rain

Answer: 2. A thirsty dog needs water. The other answers do not make sense together.

Section 3 – What is the solution to the problem?

Sam has 3 red balls and 4 blue balls. How many balls does Sam have?

1. 1 ball   2. 6 balls   3. 7 balls   4. 12 balls

Answer: 3. We add the red balls and the blue balls: 3 + 4 = 7.

How to use the practice test

  • Go over the solved example first. Each section starts with one. The examples are not timed.
  • Use a timer. We suggest up to 12 minutes per section. The Ministry has not published how much time each section gets, so this is a practice schedule only.
  • Mark answers like in the real test. Each answer has a small box. Your child fills in the box next to the correct answer with a pencil.
  • Go over the test together afterwards. The detailed solutions explain every answer, so you can see which kinds of questions need more practice.
  • Keep it calm. On the night before the real exam, stop practicing and spend some quality time together.
